A Family Affair

Hospitality is in our family DNA. True to our Romanian heritage, we love to cook, bake, tell stories and gather in celebration of our shared   lives – the very definition of an adult family home. Amelia’s mother, famous for her light and fluffy doughnuts, was the chief cook and bottle washer at our first adult family home. And she continues to delight our residents with fresh batches fried up in the Angelwings open kitchens.

Will daughters follow in our footsteps and take up the family business? It might be too soon to tell. Our eldest, Kelsie, is already showing great promise in the culinary arts, while her younger sisters are the center of attention at festive holiday gatherings. Future activity directors, perhaps?

Amelia, the Caregiver

As a little girl growing up in Romania, Amelia learned early on and firsthand about compassion as she cared for her siblings and her bedridden father while her mother worked.

Today, that same work ethic permeates her very essence. Amelia has worked tirelessly to advance the concept of adult family homes, serving on the AFH Council of Washington for 17 years, as well as the Board of the AFH Council and its bargaining team.

Her biggest achievement? Staying ten steps ahead of  inspectors who show up at Angelwings unannounced, day or night, to give the house the white-glove test.  In 16 years, Amelia has never received a single citation.

Cornelius, her husband

While Amelia oversees the staff and care of the residents, Cornelius handles the finances, constructs the homes and changes the light bulbs!

As a young man Cornelius learned the building and electrical trades from his father, ultimately receiving a degree and working as a licensed commercial electrician for the IBEW Union Local 46 for over fifteen years.

After marrying Amelia he saw her passion of caring for the elderly and wanted to support her in her dream. But he couldn’t find a house plan that would work well both as a home for his family as well as a senior care facility. After much research and interviews with owners of Adult Family Homes, Cornelius designed a custom signature design that would beautifully and functionally satisfy both those purposes.
